a synonym for luxury design

When one thinks about the design and architecture of luxury hotels and resorts, the name Jean-Michel Gathy comes to mind. Gathy’s reputation is tantamount to the extensive list of hotel properties that he had a hand in creating over the years. The award-winning Belgian architect and interior designer has over four decades of experience designing some of the world’s most iconic and breathtaking hotels.

Born in 1955 in Liège, Belgium, Gathy was influenced by the rich heritage of his birthplace. His fascination with architecture began at a tender age that after completing his studies at the Liège School of Architecture, he embarked on a journey that exposed him to diverse cultures and insights that would later influence his life and work.

In 1983, Gathy launched the design consultancy Denniston that would become synonymous with luxury and innovation in hotel interiors and architecture. Currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Denniston’s unique approach to interior design and architecture is characterised by a seamless blend of aesthetics, functionality, and a deep respect for the environment.

Gathy got his first big break with Jianguo Hotel in Beijing, which caught the attention of Hans Jenni, then president of General Hotels Management (GHM). He invited Gathy to work on various projects for GHM and later introduced him to Adrian Zecha, who was, at that time, about to launch Aman.
