Mercedes has previewed a high-tech, long-range rival for the Tesla M Model 3 in the form of the radical Concept CLA, revealed just over a year before the production version lands in UK showrooms.
Based on the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, the next-generation CLA will be completely unrelated to the compact saloon it replaces. It will be available with electric and combustion-engined drivetrains, as well as rear-and four-wheel-drive options.
The concept shown at the Munich motor show last week has a 223bhp electric motor at the rear and a two-speed transmission. Other outputs will include a base-level 201bhp variant and a scorching dual-motor four-wheel-drive AMG model, earmarked for a 2025 launch.
The new dedicated electric car platform, electric motor and battery a combination first previewed by the Mercedes Vision EQXX concept car - gives the Concept CLA what Mercedes' chief technology officer Markus Schäfer calls "phenomenal efficiency".
The new CLA will be the first in a range of MMA-based EVS-including replacements for the CLA Shooting Brake, EQA and EQB - to receive a new type of motor developed and produced in-house.
