Glazing has evolved over the years in the automotive segment and as a result, glasswork has come a long way too. From ORVMs to windows to windshields to sunroofs today. Glazing is essential as it offers both safety and security to the occupants of the vehicle. In case of a crash, how it shatters is crucial too for both occupant and pedestrian safety. According to a study by IMARC Group, the Indian automotive glass market size reached USD 821.2 mn in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 1138.7 mn by 2028. This exhibits a 5.4 per cent CAGR for the period, 2023-2028. Being in the automotive glazing business for over nine decades, SaintGobain Sekurit aims at being a part of the next generation of mobility led by its glazing solutions.
Known to enter the Indian market in 1996, Saint-Gobain set up its Sekurit business in Chakan, Pune first. Eventually, by 2005, it had plants in Chennai and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. The Pune plant focuses on commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and minibuses. The Chennai and Bhiwadi plant, on the other hand, focuses on passenger vehicles and utility vehicles. Saint-Gobain’s Sekurit business operates in four different verticals including and not limited to the business of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), OE spares, aftermarket and exports. “We make the entire range of glass products for passenger vehicles including windshields, all the side glasses, back glass and the sunroof,” highlighted Venu Shanbhag, Managing Director, Sekurit, Saint-Gobain India. According to him, “Glazing has not evolved yet but it is evolving.” “I hope it will happen faster in years to come,” he expressed.
