Evolving for Decades: Transformative Journey of Lead-Acid Batteries Continues

The Lead-Acid Battery (LAB) industry has experienced significant development over the years. The basic understanding of electro-chemical energy dates to antiquity when key experiments were conducted by Thales of Miletus and William Gilbert. It was Alessandro Volta’s development of the voltaic pile in 1800 that laid the groundwork for modern battery technology. Subsequent scientific endeavours expanded the understanding of electro-chemistry leading to early battery prototypes such as the Daniell cell in 1836.

However, it was Gaston Planté’s invention of the first commercial LAB in 1859 that truly transformed battery technology. As per the Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) market research report, the Lead-Acid Battery Market size is estimated to be at USD 58 billion by 2025, with expectations to reach USD 67 billion by 2030, and this growth underscores the ongoing advancements and robust market demand for LABs.

This article is an attempt to delve into the intriguing journey of the LAB with focus on advancements, accomplishments, current capabilities, and promising future.

Innovation Ignites Transformation

With the exponential increase in dynamic energy demands, battery manufacturers worldwide have played a crucial role in serving communities. One such pioneer is Amara Raja, founded in 1985, has left an enduring legacy in the energy storage segment. Amara Raja’s groundbreaking move was pioneering the Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) technology in the Indian Ocean rim. These VRLA batteries represent a shift towards maintenance-free and spill-proof solutions, addressing the evolving needs of various industrial applications.
