Extreme High-Speed Laser Application (EHLA): Redefining Additive Manufacturing Efficiency
EM - Efficient Manufacturing|Efficient Manufacturing - June 2024 Issue
The landscape of Additive Manufacturing (AM) persists in altering conventional manufacturing norms, presenting unmatched adaptability and productivity. Within this piece, we explore the complex realm of Directed Energy Deposition (DED) AM, investigating its crucial contribution to crafting extensive, detailed components for various industrial uses.
Extreme High-Speed Laser Application (EHLA): Redefining Additive Manufacturing Efficiency

Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies have revolutionised manufacturing processes by offering flexibility, efficiency, and design freedom. Among these, Directed Energy Deposition (DED) AM involves the precise deposition of material, typically metal powder or wire, using a focused energy source such as a laser or electron beam.

In comparison to Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) processes like Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Electron Beam Melting (EBM), DED offers distinct advantages in terms of scalability, material versatility, and the ability to repair and modify existing components. Its ability to deposit material on large-scale structures with precision makes it ideal for applications requiring the fabrication of large, complex parts, such as aerospace components and tooling for heavy machinery. Furthermore, DED processes support a wide range of materials, including metals, polymers, and composites, enabling the production of parts with tailored mechanical properties to meet specific performance requirements. Additionally, DED is well-suited for repairing high-value components, reducing downtime and costs associated with part replacement. Overall, DED stands out as a versatile and efficient AM technique with diverse applications across industries.
