As the global emphasis on sustainable development intensifies, MEP engineering stands at the crossroads of change. This specialised field is adapting to the growing demands for eco-friendly designs and energy efficient solutions, marking a significant shift in the construction industry’s approach to building and planning.
In this landscape of change, KEO has carved its niche. The company not only adapts to but also leads this shift with innovative practices. With the establishment of a dedicated Sustainability and Environment Division back in 2008, the global consultancy has consistently been at the vanguard of this industry shift.
At the helm of the company’s MEP arm is Mohamad Ballout, Director of MEP Engineering, who brings over 15 years of experience to the forefront of the industry. His expertise extends beyond traditional practices in building design, focusing on innovative and sustainable solutions. In this exclusive interview, Ballout discusses the strategic approaches, challenges, and goals that define KEO’s commitment to sustainability in the MEP sector.
Ballout begins by emphasising the importance of early integration of sustainability into MEP design, particularly in complex projects. “We collaborate closely with architects and other stakeholders,” he explains, “to optimise aspects like site selection, building orientation, transportation method, and energy use.” Ballout also highlights the criticality of location and orientation of a structure to maximise the use of solar passive system. A collaborative approach such as this ensures that sustainability is not an afterthought but a foundational design element.
