ROAD TO REGULATIONS

The rampant evolution of artificial intelligence is leaving everyone in awe and making our lives easier. Healthcare, agriculture, finance, manufacturing, and IT have benefited significantly from leveraging technology. Home to a vibrant AI startup ecosystem, India presently has over 1,000 AI startups.

However, the now indispensable technology has its share of worries and challenges. The alerting ones are the misuse of AI and manufactured material. Additionally, cases of deepfakes of personalities such as Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Aamir Khan, and Rashmika Mandanna have sent a reality check nationwide.

The European Parliament adopted the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), considered the world’s first comprehensive horizontal legal framework for AI in March.

In 2023, China enforced a new law to regulate generative AI. In February, the United Kingdom published a principles-based, non-statutory, and cross-sector AI framework.

Additionally, the US presently relies on existing federal laws and guidelines to regulate AI but is aiming to introduce AI legislation and federal regulation authority.

Recently, California’s proposed AI bill to regulate large frontier AI models has received a cold shoulder from various stakeholders. The bill requires developers of large and powerful AI systems to comply with common-sense safety standards. The Silicon Valley league is calling the move an innovation killer and will doom the entire industry.

My Reflections 2024-25

With the turn of 2024, we have turned the page to a historical moment—a quarter of a century. It is striking to consider how much history has been compressed into these 25 years. This has been no ordinary span of time. This has been an era of tectonic shifts. From the dawn of the digital age and the globalisation of economies to the climate reckoning and the relentless march of artificial intelligence, these years have witnessed transformations that once would have taken centuries to unfold. In many ways, eras have collided, overlapped, and dissolved into each other, leaving a world forever altered—more connected yet divided, more advanced yet anxious, and more hopeful yet uncertain than ever before.
