 THE TRIUMPH OF GOOD OVER EVIL

Dussehra, also called as Vijaya Dashami or Dasain in some parts of the country is an important Hindu festival that signifies the triumph of good over evil. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the seventh month of the Hindu calendar, 'Ashvin', which generally corresponds to September or October in the Gregorian calendar. It is one of the major festivals of Indian culture, celebrated in various traditions across the country. It is a ten-day long festival. Celebrations start from the first day of the 'Ashvin' month. Devotees can worship the goddess in a different avatar (incarnation) every day for a span of nine days from the first day to ninth day of the 'Ashvin' month and this period is referred to as 'Navratri', which translates to 'Nine nights. On the tenth day, the goddess will be decorated in the avatar 'Durga', when celebrations reach the peak. The tenth day marks the end of the festival.
