VOLUNTEER HELPS CRACK TEENAGERS' COLD CASE MURDERS

Five years after the 2017 homicides, investigators were still stumped about who had killed the girls and left their bodies in the woods near small town Delphi.

But on Sept. 21, 2022, sharp-eyed Kathy Shank, a retired Department of Child Services worker who in 2017 had volunteered to help organize and then digitize the 14,000 tips investigators had received, noticed something amiss.

Abigail and Libby had been dropped off to go on a hike on the Monon High Bridge Trail around 1:35 on Feb. 13, 2017. At 2:07, Libby took a photo of a man who was walking on the bridge. When the girls failed to show up for their 3:15 pickup, their families called the police. Their bodies were found the next day — their throats had been slit.
