THE news was reassuringly positive. While in Cape Town, South Africa, to host his fourth annual Earthshot Awards environmental solutions prize event Nov. 6, the Prince of Wales shared a welcome update on his wife, Princess Kate, as she continues her cancer recovery. “She’s doing really well,” William told reporters. “Hopefully she is watching tonight [and] cheering me on.”
But underneath his cheery exterior, William and the rest of the royal family are in chaos. Recent weeks have brought a series of bombshells that could threaten the future of the monarchy itself. Two years into his reign, King Charles III “is doing everything in his power to modernize and keep the monarchy going, but it’s not been an easy task,” a royal source tells Star. “The monarchy isn’t as popular as it was when Elizabeth II was queen, especially with the younger generation.” Adding to his sense of urgency is the 76-year-old’s own cancer battle. “He worries about how much longer he’s got,” adds the source. “It’s more important than ever to prepare William to take the throne and ensure the monarchy continues.”
FRESH SCANDALS
His heir has got issues of his own. Though he and Kate, both 42, recently announced she’d finished chemotherapy since revealing her own cancer diagnosis last spring, she’s yet to return to royal duties full-time. His Earthshot Prize hasn’t turned out to be the big “Super Bowl moment” organizers expected, with critics calling it a “nothing burger” that “hardly generated any buzz.” And his Oct. 30 We Can End Homelessness documentary, part of a personal campaign to eradicate the issue in Britain, tanked in the ratings. One reviewer declared the doc “an abject failure.” Others called for the future king to house those in need on his vast landholdings after he admitted his privilege left him “feeling guilty.”
