Alec Baldwin can breathe a little easier after charges against him for a fatal on-set shooting were dropped on April 20. The actor, 65, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter over the shooting during the filming of Rust in New Mexico in October 2021. The movie’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, was killed by a live bullet fired from a prop gun that was being used by Alec.

The charges were dropped reportedly after new evidence emerged suggesting that the gun could have been fired without pulling the trigger, a source close to the investigation told The Wall Street Journal. A statement released by New Mexico special prosecutors appeared to confirm this, saying that “over the last few days … new facts were revealed” in the case, requiring further investigation.

“This decision does not absolve Mr Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled,” the statement continued. “Our follow-up investigation will remain active and ongoing.”
