She's a legendary singer, songwriter and movie star, and the icon that is Tina Turner also made history by becoming the first black woman to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1967. With hits including *Nutbush City Limit', 'Private Dancer' and 'The Best', the star will celebrate her 83rd birthday on November 26.

These days, the now-retired Turner lives quietly in Switzerland with her music executive husband, Erwin Bach. The pair wed in 2013, but have been together for more than three decades. That love was a long-overdue happy ending for the star, whose first marriage to fellow musician Ike Turner was marred by violence and abuse.

Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee in 1939. Her parents were poor sharecroppers, and by the '50s the singer would be living solely with her grandparents. Her 1986 memoir, I, Tina, detailed an unhappy childhood, but little did young Turner know that music would one day save her soul.
