Last year on July 3, same-sex couple Cheitan Sharma and Abhishek Ray got married in a&nbsp;beautiful intimate Bengali-Marwari ceremony in the presence of their loved ones, in what is believed to be the City of Joy's first gay marriage. They hosted a Hindu wedding with rituals that honoured both their cultures, surrounded by well wishers aged between three and 89. We caught up with digital content creator Cheitan to find out how things fell into place for them. "In my case, love gave me freedom," he states. "Freedom to live the life I've always desired. I got married to my partner in front of my family, which is a dream for millions of people in India."
Cheitan met Abhishek on Facebook,&nbsp;started chatting, and felt at ease with him. "After our relationship strengthened, we decided to meet in person," he explains. "I planned a quick trip to Kolkata to meet Abhishek, but his love convinced me to extend my stay." Cheitan's decision to come out about his sexual orientation had not been easy.&nbsp;Bullied as a child, he decided to confide in his two older sisters, who made things easier for him, though it was hard for his mother to deal with the truth. "After a&nbsp;couple of months, Abhishek came to my house and told my family about our relationship; he was the one who convinced my mother," gushes Cheitan, who proposed to Abhishek on his knees in front of the Taj Mahal, "Now everything is good, and all are happy, thankfully, but it was a roller coaster ride." Cheitan recalls. Soon after their wedding,&nbsp;pictures of them went viral on social media; the internet couldn't get enough of the adorable newlyweds.
The couple will soon celebrate their first wedding anniversary, and Cheitan has some surprises in store for Abhishek; he can't stop singing his praises. "For me, he is love; he is the one. I am grateful for him being there," he says as he signs off.
