If you follow journalist and former news anchor Lauren Sánchez on social media, it's easy to imagine the Emmy winner's life as a string of glamorous adventures: sailing on a yacht through the Mediterranean Sea with her fiancé, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos; flying helicopters with celebrity pals like Orlando Bloom; speaking out in defense of the climate on behalf of the Bezos Earth Fund; or attending the Oscars and Met Gala in couture. "Sitting quiet is not my best afternoon," admits the mom of three, who splits her time between Bezos's hometown of Miami and L.A., where she's been preparing her younger two children-Evan, 18, and Ella, 16-for their next year of high school. But she does relish the quiet of the morning. "I love waking up early before the kids, making Jeff and I coffee. It's this magic moment of us just talking. We don't have our phones-that's Jeff's rule, by the way. The kids get up, and I do mom things-make them breakfast, get them out the door-and then it's just me, the dogs and Jeff."
Of course, Sánchez, 54, is more than a parent or jet-setter. For nearly two decades she was a news anchor and entertainment journalist, appearing on KTLA, Extra and more. She later started an aviation company after learning to fly helicopters at age 40. Now, with the Sept. 10 release of her first children's book, The Fly Who Flew to Space, she's growing her résumé. "Never in a million years did I think a dyslexic kid like me would be an author," she says. "I'm so humbled by it."
