Ten days after doctors transferred two embryos into Shelby Stewart—who had battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as a teenager—she was a “roller coaster” of emotions. Despite having been told she would never conceive and carry a baby, the then-29-year-old from Vineyard, Utah, took several home pregnancy tests that revealed she was pregnant. But days later a nurse telephoned to inform her and her husband, Chase, that recent blood work indicated something was off. Based on the results, the nurse said, Shelby was probably miscarrying again. “I was just devastated,” she recalls. “I kept thinking, ‘This cannot be happening. There is no way I’m having my fourth miscarriage.’”
