One of the bougainvillea's many attractive qualities is that it can add colour to a garden for most of the year. This popular drought-tolerant plant is also versatile - it can be trained into a hedge, grow in a pot or garden and creep high along any strong support structure. Birds love its protective stems and foliage and it's known to grow relatively quickly and wildly.
DID YOU KNOW?
This plant was discovered in 1768 in Rio de Janeiro by French naturalist Philibert Commerson. He named the plant after a dear friend, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville.
PERFECT FOR THE HOME
Whether in a small or sprawling garden, the bougainvillea is always a treat. As they climb walls easily (supported by a structure and ties), they can draw the eye upward in a smaller space as well as grow wildly to cover a large area.
