ACNE is a problem many of us associate with the teenage years, but for many adults it's a reality that lingers well into their thirties, forties and beyond. Whether it's a stubborn breakout around the jawline or an unexpected flare-up during stressful times, adult acne can be just as challenging as it is in adolescence. The good news? It's manageable with the right approach, a tailored skincare routine and professional treatments.
We spoke to Dr Fawzia Salie, founder of Aesthete, Aesthetics and Anti-Aging clinic in Cape Town, to get expert advice on how to tackle this problem once and for all.
UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES
"Unlike teenage acne, which often appears on the T-zone and is linked to hormonal changes during puberty, adult acne has different triggers and frequently appears on the jawline, chin and neck," Dr Salie says. She adds that in adults the causes are more diverse and may include:
HORMONAL CHANGES "Many adults experience hormonal fluctuations that contribute to breakouts, particularly women. These can occur during menstruation, pregnancy and peri-menopause," Dr Salie explains.
STRESS is another significant factor. When we're stressed, the body produces more cortisol, stimulating the sebaceous glands to overproduce oil, leading to clogged pores and acne.
LIFESTYLE FACTORS Poor sleep and environmental stressors are causes.
DIET While not the sole cause, certain foods can trigger breakouts.
"High-glycaemic foods, such as refined sugars and white bread, spike insulin levels, leading to inflammation. Dairy products, particularly skim milk, may also influence acne due to their hormonal content," she explains.
She suggests a balanced diet rich in wholegrains, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids to help improve skin health.
