LET'S JUST BE REAL FOR A HOT SECOND - adult acne is a real thing and we can't even try to deny, or disguise it. I know many of us were hoping that oozy, red, blunt and terribly painful pimples were something we'd left behind in our teen years, or those that were lucky enough to have missed the hectic pimple stage thought they were in the clear for life, right? Well - if you feel that you might be struggling with it now, you best listen up and hear what the experts have to say to ensure that you know exactly how to deal with these bad boys and get them under control, ASAP!
LET'S GET DEEP Adult acne, like teenage acne, is primarily caused by the combination of several factors that contribute to the clogging of hair follicles (pores) causing inflammation. Here are some of the main factors that can contribute to adult acne:
Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal changes, especially fluctuations in androgens (male hormones) such as testosterone, can trigger increased oil production in the skin. This excess oil can mix with dead skin cells and lead to clogged pores, which are a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.
Excess Oil Production: Excessive sebum (oil) production is a common contributor to acne. This can be influenced by genetics, hormonal imbalances, and even certain medications.
Clogged Pores: When dead skin cells and excess oil accumulate in the hair follicles, they can clog the pores and create an environment where acne-causing bacteria thrive.
Bacteria: The skin naturally harbours a type of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). When the pores are clogged, this bacteria can multiply and contribute to the development of inflammatory acne.
