We know the feeling: The holidays are over, the weather is legit freezing and the urge to curl up under a fuzzy blanket is real.
But before you toss your running shoes to the back of your closet ’til spring, consider this: “The colder climate allows your body to perform at your best,” says Jimmy Martin, founder of the fitness equipment company Brrrn. He explains that when you exercise in warm weather, your body has to work very hard to cool itself (which happens by way of sweat) and maintain its baseline temp of 98.6 degrees.
Think about how quickly you tire out when you go for a run in July—that’s because your body is on overdrive as it tries to keep your temperature balanced in the face of all that heat and humidity.
But when it’s cold, the weather has the opposite impact. “Chillier conditions effectively put a superhero cape on your back. Your body doesn’t have to work to regulate its temperature, and it can use that saved-up energy to perform better,” says Martin.
This allows you to function more efficiently, and you’ll get more out of your workout in a shorter period of time. “Plus, when it’s cold, it just feels good to move because your body wants to work to stay warm,” adds Martin.
