DASH diet… for heart health

Concerned about high cholesterol or high blood pressure? The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) was ‘created to help people keep high blood pressure under control,’ says Tracy Parker, heart health dietitian at the British Heart Foundation. ‘It’s low in saturated fat and focuses on plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, lean protein and low-fat dairy products – all rich in nutrients that can lower blood pressure, such as potassium, calcium, protein and fibre.’ This diet is also about eating less salt. ‘Too much can increase the risk of heart and circulatory diseases,’ adds Tracy. ‘Adults should have no more than 6g salt per day.’
