Dating back 230 million years to the Triassic Period, this newest member of the dinosaur family joins the ranks of the oldest dinosaurs, comparable in age to specimens found in South America and India. 230 million years ago, all three of these now disparate regions were joined together in a hot and humid band on the supercontinent known as Pangea.</p>
<p>Mbiresaurus was described by Darlington Munyikwa, Michel Zondo (both of the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe), and Chris Griffin (Yale University), in the journal Nature as a sauropodomorph. While small, it is an early relative of what would evolve into the truly immense long-necked sauropods.</p>
