<p>Researchers have expressed concern about "geoengineering" schemes to chemically alter Earth's oceans to reverse human-induced climate change. They note the potential for unintended consequences of messing around with Mother Nature. But in the Apalachicola Bay along the Florida Panhandle, conditions have become dire. As waters warm and become increasingly acidic, the region's oyster harvest has declined and is at significant risk of collapse. Thus, in an estuary of the Bay, they called in the scientists. As described in a recent issue of the journal Science, for the first time ever a team injected a large volume of an alkaline lime powder mixed with seawater into a natural environment.</p>
<p>And? It seems to have worked! There was a modest but noticeable draw-down of carbon dioxide from the air above the estuary and reduced acidity within the waters, and apparently minimal perturbation of marine life in the study region. A team including Wade McGillis (University of Notre Dame) presented their findings at a conference of the American Geophysical Union. They hope it will lead to further real-world tests and refinements.</p>
