Writing in the journal Current Biology, a team led by Neil P. Kelley (Vanderbilt University) reports what they view as evidence of ichthyosaurs seeking out protected birthing waters during the Triassic Period. Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles from the "Age of Dinosaurs" similar in shape to today's dolphins. But dolphins were pipsqueaks compared to the ichthyosaurs Kelley's team studied. Adult Shonisaurus popularis ichthyosaurs averaged nearly 50 feet long. More than 100 have been found near the ghost town of Berlin, Nevada.
Many previous studies have focused on a grouping of seven skeletons clustered together on a single bedding plane on public display as part of Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park. Thus, all sorts of theories have been proposed for this "mass death assemblage." Perhaps they washed ashore during a storm. Perhaps they died of a toxic&nbsp;red tide. Perhaps it was a volcanic eruption. However, new analyses of the rocks have eliminated the last two hypotheses, and Kelley's study reports no evidence for significant "environmental perturbation, meaning the ichthyosaurs were not likely washed into the area by a storm.
Rather than focus on this one assemblage of seven S.&nbsp;popularis skeletons, Kelley's team examined skeletons found across a much broader area, and they weren't all clustered like the seven that died together. Taking a closer look at the fossils, Kelley's team finds adults, embryos, and newborns, but no juvenile nor sub-adult critters. Thus, they conclude, this was a protected birthing area that existed for millennia, resulting in the large concentration of fossil remains over many years, not a deathbed from a single catastrophic event.
