It's been generally accepted among Earth and planetary scientists that a "protoplanet" the size of Mars directly impacted Earth as it was forming 4.5 billion years ago.
One result? The birth of our Moon! That hypothetical protoplanet has been dubbed Theia, and scientists believe they've discovered remnants of it not only in the Moon but deep below ground right here on Earth.
In the journal Nature, a team led by Qian Yuan (Arizona State University and Caltech) reports on what they call "basal mantle anomalies" of two strange blobs the size of continents residing between the crust and the core. One is beneath Africa, the other beneath the Pacific Ocean. The blobs, revealed by seismic images of our Earth's interior, have a greater density than material normally encountered in the mantle and have long posed a quandary, which Yuan's team believes they've solved with supercomputer modeling exploring exactly what would have happened during the impact with Theia.
While much of Theia (along with pieces of Earth) was flung out to form our companion Moon, it appears some of it stuck around and is still to be found directly beneath our feet!
