The structure of standing stones is estimated to be 7,000 years old. While officially called the Dolmen of Guadalperal, it has been nicknamed "the Spanish Stonehenge." This structure was described by archeologists 100 years ago. It was allowed to be submerged in 1963 when a dam constructed on the Tagus River created the Valdeca&ntilde;as reservoir. Now that it has resurfaced, a new generation of archeologists is swarming to take advantage of a rare opportunity for a reexamination. They are applying new archeological techniques not around in the 1920s and are creating digital records.
Not to be outdone, southern Spain has offered up an even larger complex of over 525 standing stones in the province of Huelva. It's been described as "a huge megalithic complex" and may be the largest such complex in Europe.
We have avocados to thank for this newest find. A plantation was planned but needed permits, which involved surveying for potential archeological artifacts. Artifacts they found! Stone circles, aligned stones, and stone dolmens (tombs). It's now being called the La Torre-La Janera site, and the stones are believed to have been erected 6,000 to 8,000 years ago. Scientists have begun excavations scheduled to extend into 2026.
