As they planned their next move, Emily and Martin Fletcher knew they were looking for a welcoming characterful and unusual property. We were starting to outgrow our two-bedroom flat in Bath, and needed more space for our daughter Ruby, who's four,' says Emily. We loved the idea of an ambitious project as well something we could really get our teeth into.
When they spotted a 400-year-old former inn with potential to become a family home, they knew it could be perfect for them. Previously known as The Fox, the Grade II-listed property had the peaceful country setting and all the space and charm that Emily, director of an online interiors business, could wish for. However, it had been left empty and untouched for some years, so there were major challenges too.
The building stood on a utilitarian, black tarmac car park. Inside, the three bars and decrepit catering and hospitality facilities were mostly still in place.
There were men's and ladies' loos, bare floors, stainless steel sinks and worktops, and lots of tatty wall tiles, Emily recalls.
