"MY GRANDMOTHER was a wonderful gardener, but her kitchen window was what always caught my eye when I pulled into her driveway," says Laura Digges, the Mount Holly, Virginia, artist behind Papier Fleurs (@papier_fleurs). "Even though she lived up in Pennsylvania and there would be drifts of snow 5 feet deep, she would still somehow have these&nbsp;beautiful geraniums growing there." Like her grandmother, Digges has a magical green thumb. But rather than soil and seeds, she works with tissue paper and paint. In 2020, she wanted to make something for her mother's birthday that she says "you couldn't necessarily go to the jewelry store and get." The artist put her appreciation for origami to use, fashioning a faux flower that looked like the one that had always brought color and life to her beloved grandmother's windowsill.
"It's a labor of love," she acknowledges. The process is lengthy; just a small geranium takes about six hours.&nbsp;Depending on the shades she's creating, Digges will bleach, dye, or paint the tissue paper that forms the petals. The leaves require careful attention, too, as they're individually painted to evoke the variegation of their natural counterparts. From there, the flowers are assembled with wire stems and then set in plasterfilled pots. "In the evenings, I used to needlepoint; now I just make blossoms," she says with a laugh.
Last year, once again inspired by her mom's birthday, Digges expanded the Papier Fleurs collection to include foxgloves. "My mother has a spectacular garden, and her foxgloves grow really well. It's a meaningful flower to us," she says. During the holiday season, Digges introduced a holly version, and this spring, she plans to add lily of the valley.
For her, it's about creating a "happy wink" that delights-and often earns a lingering look. "I love to watch as someone opens one up. Their husband will circle the table and ask, 'Is that real? Is it paper?"" says Digges. "These blooms get everybody's attention in a whimsical way."
