Beyond The Tourbillon
August Man SG|Issue 185
There are people centuries after their passing, whose influence continues to be felt to this day; for watch lovers, one such man is named Abraham-Louis Breguet
JONATHAN HO
Beyond The Tourbillon

WHILE HE IS FAMOUSLY KNOWN as the inventor of the tourbillon, there's more to Breguet than just tourbillons; his perpetuelle mechanism, the pare-chute system (which we adapted to the modern incabloc shock protection system), an automatic winding system, the souscription, and the montre à tact earned him a Royal and aristocratic clientele across Europe. Abraham-Louis Breguet was quite singularly the man who had established most of the watchmaking foundations that we still use today, not just in terms of aesthetic principles like his namesake numerals and hands but also his technical innovations, years after his passing.

Magnetic pivot in the Classique Chronometry 7727

With double silicon balance springs, silicon pallet lever and silicon escape wheel beating in concert at 10Hz (literally double the beat of famed high-beat El Primero), the Classique Chronometry 7727 is quite simply emblematic of Breguet's modern prowess and a legitimate continuation of its namesake founder's legacy. For Breguet, the impetus for the invention of the tourbillon was his understanding that regulating organ was one of the most important yet most easily affected components in the mechanical ecosystem. Today instead of fighting gravity, it battles friction. With crucial components in the regulating organ made from silicon, their lightweight and ability to run without oil with greatly reduced inertia means it overcomes many of the modern problems that plague contemporary timepieces.
