IN 2021, Dave Chappelle's Netflix special The Closer exposed him to yet another "cancel attempt". He had aligned himself with J.K. Rowling, calling himself "Team TERF", and stated, like she did, that, "gender is a fact".
Then, Chappelle ends the special by telling a story about Daphne Dorman, a trans comic who he befriended in San Francisco. By all accounts, an authentic friendship evidenced by the fact that Dorman opened for one of his shows at a comedy club and though she bombed - her work ethic, courage and punctuality encouraged Chappelle to take her under his mentorship. During a frank discussion about trans issues, he admitted that he didn't understand her, to which Dorman responded: "I don't need you to understand me. I just need you to believe that I'm having a human experience."
