Sneakers are like mobile phones. Buy one today and it's outdated by tomorrow. Shoe tech is about as complicated too: gel sole, micro bounce sole, Gore Tex, flyknit. And new designs drop with the frenzy once reserved for the next iPhone.

Good shoemaking will always come at a price, but not every special-edition release is worth its five-figure price. "Most of us tend to ignore mild to moderate foot pain," says physiotherapist Dr Samrin Siddiqui. She has been studying feet at Biofoot, a foot health company. Siddiqui's oft-used piece of advice: Don't force the foot to adjust to the shoe; buy shoes that support the foot, and therefore the whole body.
