Our EUROPEAN Bucket List

Ibiza – Spain

Ibiza has beautiful sandy beaches and a chilled vibe that make it a firm favourite for our family every year. Hiring a car is the best – the scenery and small cove beaches you find on the way are just stunning.

Rhine Valley – Germany

The drive along the Rhine Valley remains my favourite memory of my holiday in Germany. The scenery of this 65km stretch is breathtaking and dotted with many castles – hilltop ones built during the Roman Empire and castles on the banks of the river that are now palaces, restaurants, hostels or museums. It truly deserves being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the northern end is Koblenz, with Stolzenfels Castle, a former medieval fortress castle turned into a palace; at the southern end is Rüdesheim am Rhein with the historic Drosselgasse alleyway being a major attraction with tourists.

Outer Hebrides – UK

After a morning misadventure when we got stuck up to our waists in a quicks-and-style section of Uig Bay and only escaped the incoming tide with moments to spare, my brother and I ended up in a stunning old guesthouse perched above the water, eating a Michelin-quality dinner of carrot and cumin soup, a house-smoked salmon caught that day by the innkeeper, and a few generous slabs from a giant wheel of Stilton to finish. Another memorable day exploring the appealingly quirky Outer Hebrides.

Capri – Italy

This tiny and very glamorous island is a must for a romantic getaway. We also went back with the kids and enjoyed a day at the beach club, long lunch with rosé, fresh seafood and amazing views. A boat trip around the island and under Faraglioni rock is iconic!

Rome – Italy

I think Rome is a must-do at some stage in your life. Don’t go in summer – we went in early May which was lovely but already fairly busy.
