Table talk

If you're in the market for a new dining table, surfboard and oval shapes are big - especially if you often entertain large groups of friends and family (and, of course, if you have the space). Smaller rooms are better suited to round café and bistro-style tables, but switch it up by choosing one with a unique base think hourglass or wishbone - and a top that's different to the other table surfaces in your home. "You can't go wrong with a stone top," says interior designer Jacoline Phalane of Jacoline S Designs. "It's a clean, modern look that brings character to a space."

Sustainability is another trend that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, so expect to find plenty of options for dining tables in natural, ethically sourced materials. Live edge (featuring the natural edge of a wooden surface) is the decor poster child for sustainability, bringing any room to life and giving off a warm, earthy feel. "Organic shapes are so unique - I'd definitely recommend them for a dining room update," adds Jacoline.

Set the base for your table and create a welcoming ambience with a large rug, which has the added benefit of protecting your floors. A strategically placed and well-chosen rug can also do wonders for a room - think faux fur, texture and pops of colour.

Arty facts

If you have a statement piece that's just waiting to be shown off, the dining room is the place for it. An eye-catching focal point can bring a unique energy to the space - whether it's a sense of quirkiness or something super-stylish or abstract and acts as a conversation-starter for your dinner parties.

"If you enjoy hosting often, I suggest having a bold statement piece that will be the centre of discussion for your guests," says Jacoline. "Art is so personal; choosing artwork that tells a story you can relate to is what's important."
