Wander the Western Cape
It makes sense that the streets of the 2014 World Design Capital are teeming with art galleries, sculpture gardens and street art. When in Cape Town, it's worth spending time at the well-known art meccas: the centenarian Everard Read, envelope-pushing Goodman Gallery, Iziko National Art Gallery filled with both old and new treasures, contemporary Stevenson Gallery, and the dynamic Zeitz MOCAA Museum (which has free entry for African citizens between 10am and 1pm every Wednesday).
If you prefer your art in the open air, why not take a stroll through the undulating sculpture garden at The Norval Foundation or head to Salt River for a street art walking tour with Baz-Art? Consider yourself lucky if you're in town on the first Thursday of the month, when the inner-city streets are filled with people strolling between galleries, restaurants and creative events (check out First Thursday's website for their programme).
For something a little different, visit 16 on Lerotholi and Ntinga Khozi Fine Art Centre - two new galleries to appreciate the art of Langa and Khayelitsha, respectively.
And if you're headed to the Winelands, you'll find an abundance of galleries in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Heading further afield, we highly recommend a meander along the Garden Route & Klein Karoo Art Route or the Knysna Art Route for a fabulous selection of galleries and local studios. Practically every little town in this province has its own gallery, so keep your eyes open for the creativity hidden just about anywhere and everywhere you look.
