Wedding-centric menswear has traditionally been synonymous with bandhgalas, sherwanis, and bandi jackets. However, in the last five years, this stagnant menswear space has evolved considerably with today's well-travelled and evolved grooms and their groomsmen opting for experimental and fun pieces, which are in sync with their core personalities. More and more grooms are opting for sheer organza kurtas, bandis and sherwanis with edgy cuts and draped pieces, which are rooted in tradition, yet look impossibly of-the moment. For cocktails, one sees custom tuxedos tailored with dramatic lapels and worn with statement pin-tucked shirts and for sangeet, they no longer shy away from sporting head-to-toe prints with elan.
SVA by Sonam & Paras Modi, a label steeped in graphic prints and vibrant hues, has been creating twinsets, shirts, kurtas, and bandis in jewel-toned fabrics. Sonam Modi of SVA observes that more and more grooms are experimenting of late. "There was a time when grooms would opt for creams and pastels without giving it a second thought. However, of late, they're having fun with bold colours, experimental prints and new silhouettes. I wouldn't say their wedding shopping is trend based, but they definitely like to dress as per their personality, and further enhance it. A playful use of vibrant prints, layering etc enables them to do that. Sheers pieces are gaining popularity in menswear, as a lot of boys want to stand out. Men are taking their fashion very seriously, and they like to invest in a carefully curated and elaborate wardrobe, with multiple statement pieces to stay ahead of the pack.
