Fernanda Torres carries a political thriller about Brazilian dictatorship.
The Banality of Evil

THE GREAT Brazilian actress and writer Fernanda Torres recently won a surprise Golden Globe for her performance in Walter Salles’s I’m Still Here. Because Torres had not been pegged by many as a major Oscars-season contender, the so-called upset prompted some discussion about why she might have won. Could it have been because many of the heavyweights were confined to the Musical or Comedy category? Or maybe because other critical front-runners weren’t even nominated? I’d like to propose a radical new theory of Torres’s victory: She won because the voters had actually seen the movie. It appears the Academy has too. I’m Still Here has now received three Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture and one for Torres in the Best Actress category. The high-wire tension of her performance carries almost the entirety of Salles’s political thriller.
