Skeletal Beauty

It is not every day that we come across skeleton watches, but when we do, the truly exquisite ones will inevitably awaken and enthral the horological voyeur in us.

Skeletal Beauty

Revealing our true selves to others requires immense courage, as it exposes our vulnerabilities and might subject ourselves to scrutiny. Likewise, the creation of openworked (or skeleton) timepieces can be just as daunting.

But skeleton watches are a captivating demonstration of craftsmanship, showcasing the watchmaker's artistry and mastery in all their glory the absence of a covered dial leaves very little to the imagination.

Enthusiasts of mechanical timepieces would readily acknowledge their profound fascination with the exquisite craftsmanship and storied legacies that these watches embody. And those enchanted by the inner workings of mechanical watches are often most intrigued when every intricate detail of the movement is presented in full view, as seen in skeleton watches.

These timepieces offer a rare opportunity, appealing to both watch aficionados as well as those just stepping foot into the captivating world of horology and mechanical watchmaking. It is truly mesmerising to observe the gear trains, balance wheel and escapement in action, especially the systematic coordination of these components as they mark the passage of time.

Skeleton watches came about in 1760, when French clockmaker André-Charles Caron removed the dials of his pocket watches and they caught the eye of his customers, who were intrigued as they peered into the inner mechanics of the timepieces.

Watchmakers are driven towards innovation and the pursuit of excellence in their embrace of transparency as the skeletonisation of a watch does away with the dial that typically conceals the watch movement. And this movement is stripped to the bare bones of just the essential metal components needed to keep the watch ticking.
