<p><em>We&rsquo;re not going to make it! </em>worried Dr Vishwaraj Vemala, as he and his mum&nbsp;rushed to catch their AirIndia flight from London to Bangalore last December. Road closures delayed their commute but luckily, the duo were able to make it just in time. Weary from his night shift at Birmingham&rsquo;s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the stressful ride to the airport, the 43-year-old liver specialist dozed off minutes after the plane took off. But just a few hours later, the urgent sounds of an in-flight announcement broke his slumber: &ldquo;This is a medical emergency. Is there a doctor on board?&rdquo; A fellow passenger had collapsed due to cardiac arrest.</p>
<p>While trained to provide basic life support, the crew now needed a doctor, and quickly. Vemala had the knowhow, but resuscitating a man 40,000 feet in the air was new to him too.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The airline had an emergency kit, with plenty of resuscitative medication but it was rationed. Syringes and venflons were limited and there were no monitoring instruments,&rdquo; explains Vemala. So he got creative and managed to collect a watch with a heart rate monitor, a pulse oximeter, a glucose meter and blood-pressure machine from the other passengers.</p>
<p>After an hour, he was able to resucitate the man, but soon after, a second cardiac arrest hit. &ldquo;The prognosis on an immediate second arrest isn&rsquo;t good. We were able to revive him again, but had at least another five hours to go before landing,&rdquo; Vemala recalls. With the help of the crew who monitored the patient&rsquo;s vitals and responses, he kept the man alive until the pilot was able to arrange an emergency landing in Mumbai, where officials took over.</p>
