Natural-language tools powered by artificial intelligence are trained using books, scientific research and data from the internet. They can then generate answers to questions, write articles and mimic human conversation. Some,&nbsp;including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Med-PaLM, have even passed the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam.
But that doesn't mean these tools are qualified to diagnose symptoms and dish out health advice, says Benjamin Tolchin, a neurologist and director of the Center of Clinical Ethics at Yale New Haven Health in Connecticut.
The technology is new and has serious pitfalls, including gender or racial bias, privacy concerns and "hallucinations," a term used to describe a chatbot's occasional tendency to generate false facts. When asked, even ChatGPT itself says it "is not a medical professional, and responses should not be considered as medical advice." Plus, like Google searches or webbased symptom checkers, chatbots lack real-life context and may lead a person to focus on the worst-case scenario.
So a chatbot can certainly help with research, but there's no substitute for a consult with a real doctor, who also can provide comfort and reassurance.&nbsp;
