Herd Mentality

THE PROTECTOR Dr Paula Kahumbu, 57, is the CEO of WildlifeDirect, a National Geographic Explorer and recipient of numerous awards for her work in protecting Africa’s endangered species. She’s best known for her efforts to halt the illegal trade in elephant ivory and her campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Africa’s natural heritage.

I was looking for a PhD project, so I spent a week in Amboseli National Park with field scientists studying elephants. It stole my heart that you can get so close to these magnificent animals and learn from them as individuals, not just as a species.

The matriarch makes all the decisions for the herd. She stands in the middle or at the back of the family and rumbles, instructing them where to go. She’s observant and will make decisions for the benefit of a baby, especially if the infant’s mother is inexperienced. She stops and shades a newborn, allowing them to lie down and sleep as they tire easily, especially if it’s hot or the herd is crossing marshy landscapes.
