World’s First University for Tribal Students
Dr Achyuta Samanta came up with the path-breaking initiative Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in 1992–93 to empower tribal communities through education and eradicate poverty. It has now grown in scale and scope and caters to 80,000 indigenous children. Of these, 30,000 students study at the main campus in Bhubaneswar, 40,000 are alumni, and 10,000 study at 10 satellite centers of KISS across Odisha. The students come from 62 different tribal groups within the region, of which 13 are Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.
