Picture a miniature fire trucklike robot, equipped with high-tech cameras, adjustable viewing angles and height, bright lighting and smooth forward and reverse movement. This little machine can navigate through 15 metres of clogged sewers to pinpoint blockages and breaks. It eliminates the need for manual scavenging.
Gujarat has the sixth highest manual scavenging deaths in India. From 2018 to 2023, 28 people in the state died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks. To address this, a team of six final-year students at Ahmedabad University (AU) designed the robot to inspect sewage pipelines, identify areas needing cleaning and detect defects before they cause breakdowns.
