When Jennifer Lopez sung Love Don't Cost a Thing, she must have known she is saying something profound. Genuine feelings and emotional bonds are beyond reasoning, something one realises with time, although relationships can be complicated and love alone may not be enough to sustain them. While it is true that love can smoothen rough edges, or that deep bonds can balm your wounds, it is equally true that people, despite love, drift apart and go separate ways. Let's understand how that happens.
No communication, no lasting bond. No matter how much two people love and feel for each other, it is essential they communicate openly, from discussing small nothings to exchanging views on subjects that concern both. It is also necessary to speak about things that may seem small and insignificant, unimportant or even trivial, but relate to everyday matters that concern the two. Communicating and sharing thoughts should also be effortless. In the absence of an honest, empathetic and understanding bond, distance grows, leading eventually to neglect and thus unresolved issues. Most relationships have an easy flow of communication when they start off but life's complex situations and vagaries can create blocks between two people and their thought processes, resulting in them holding back their feelings and deferring heavy and demanding conversations.
