CHEDDAR is still Britain's favourite cheese, nearly 1,000 years after it was first made by monks.

Why we're still gorging on Cheddar...after 1,000 years

It was the overwhelming winner in a poll of 1,000 consumers with 42% choosing it as their top cheese.

Cheddar is the most commonly bought cheese with 75% of shoppers buying it every month.

Red Leicester followed by Stilton completed the top three favourites, each with 6% of the vote.

Despite being a nation famous for cheese, with more than 500 varieties, France secured only fourth and fifth spots with Camembert and Brie.
