A DAILY record for winter migrant arrivals was recorded on Thursday after 609 people crossed the Channel.
Home Office figures showed those entering the UK via small boats in December now tops 1,000 and totals more than 34,500 across the year.
Until Thursday, December crossings had been low due to bad weather.
On nine of the 12 days this month there were no crossings. However, the 609 on Thursday were the highest since October 18.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described the official figures as a "day of shame for Labour".
He added: "The huge number of illegal crossings shows Labour is failing to tackle small boats.
