Talking to the Mirror, the radio DJ and presenter revealed how he had to be rescued in the middle of the night by a security guard during a storm.
Melvin shouted for help when he woke up drenched and hungry after barely eating anything the night before.
"I had my mic on, and I was like, 'Guys, I want help"," he said. "This guy came out like a commando... he had a light on, and he's like, 'Melvin, are you OK, come with me."
Viewers watched the aftermath as Melvin sobbed on Oti Mabuse's shoulder. But the 44-year-old star said his meltdown was much worse, and nearly all the campmates took it in turns to be with him.
Asked if he contemplated quitting, he admitted: "Yes, because I found it difficult, and I thought the finish line seemed quite far away." But he said he decided to tough it out because he was the first contestant voted out on Strictly Come Dancing in 2016, alongside partner Janette Manrara. He added: "I didn't want to let my family down.
