STOKE & UNITED LEGEND LOU MACARI
Lou Macari... an angel in Stoke and part of the last United side to be relegated

THAT brown envelope On His Majesty's Service offering Lou Macari a knighthood must have got lost in the post again.

Ludicrously, as a nation we elevate useless politicians and somebody's child to the House of Lords but ignore Macari saving hundreds of homeless people from the streets of Stoke-on-Trent.

The Manchester United legend's sanctuary, near the site of Stoke's old Victoria Ground, still offers shelter to 28 fallen angels every night.

Macari has been rescuing the homeless since the night in 2016 when he watched a TV news bulletin about Stoke's problem of rough sleeping, jumped into his car and drove round the city to see the scale of desolation for himself.

He resolved to tackle the issue personally, and his eponymous foundation has been a crown jewel amid the Potteries' kiln fields.

If there was any decency left in Whitehall, somebody would invite him to an investiture at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace. "I don't have a magic wand, but if people need a helping hand to get off the streets and back to a structured way of life, we're here for them," said Macari, now 75.
