Lack of trainees jeopardising Labour's education'promise

FEWER people are training to be primary school teachers and the government must take action, warn education experts.

Labour promised 6,500 new teachers in its manifesto and targets for primary teachers rose from 9,180 to 9,400 in the past year.

But the number of entrants fell from 8,633 to 8,258, says the Department for Education.

The number of secondary school teacher trainees was closer to meeting the government target than last academic year.
