BANNING social media for under16s is on the table if tech companies do not take action to protect children, a senior minister says.Technology Secretary Peter Kyle yesterday told Ofcom to get tougher with firms ahead of new powers in the Online Safety Act taking effect next year.Social media companies will be required to protect users particularly children from harmful content. This will include a crackdown on under-13s having access to age-restricted content.Asked if the UK could push its age limits up to 16, Mr Kyle told the Telegraph: "When it comes to keeping young people safe, everything is on the table." He has published for the first time strategic priorities for Ofcom.Chairman of the Molly Rose Foundation, Ian Russell, whose daughter ended her life aged 14 after viewing harmful content, said the priorities would allow Ofcom to be bolder but more reform to the rules was still needed.Maria Neophytou, of children's charity NSPCC, said the priorities have "the potential to change the online world for children".An Ofcom spokeswoman said: "Our resolve to create a safer life online has never been stronger."
