GANGS of crooks will be deployed to fix Britain's pothole plague.
They will fill in craters under community sentences to ease the problem which cost drivers &pound;500million in repairs last year.
Villains will be trained before they carry out the work and will be monitored by the Probation Service.
A pilot scheme will start in the south-westone of the worst affected regions - and could be rolled out across the country.
It will be the first time repairing roads will form part of a criminal sentence in the UK.
Work is expected to start in October and is being backed by Justice Secretary Alex Chalk.
Devon and Cornwall's Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez came up with the idea after saying an extra &pound;9.3million in Government cash was not enough for the pothole repair bill.
Devon County Council already has a scheme where volunteers mend minor holes, but Ms Hernandez wants criminals to do the unpaid work.
She said: "There is a huge problem with potholes in this area. Why not classify pothole repair as unpaid work suitable for a community sentence? This is a great way of delivering visible justice, a way for people to see payback happening in their communities."
