And he made sure after Sunday's season finale that everyone knows he is up for the challenge.
The Brit has long been referred to as a future drivers' champion and that is the one major achievement he has left to tick off his list.
This year he fell short, though being beaten by Max Verstappen after putting up an admirable fight is hardly something to be embarrassed about.
